Help Bring Freelance Isn't Free to California!

Earlier this year, California State Senator Scott Wiener introduced Senate Bill 988 (SB 988) or as we like to call it, the Freelance isn’t Free Act. As in other parts of the country, where we have been successful in implementing similar laws, it aims to ensure fundamental labor protections for freelance workers, enforced by the State Labor Commissioner and the Attorney General. These protections include the right to a contract, prompt payment within 30 days of completing work, and the right to double damages for non-payment.

We took a huge step in February of 2023 when we passed similar legislation in the City of Los Angeles, but it only applies to work performed within county limits. By expanding this legislation statewide, we can ensure that you will have basic labor protections, like prompt payment and the right to a contract. We believe that from San Diego to Sacramento all Californians deserve to be covered under the law.

What can you do to help pass this legislation? There’s a few ways!
