The July 24, 1994 cover of Time magazine.
Today is the 120th anniversary of Sidney Hillman's birth. Hillman, for those who don't know, was the pioneering labor leader who founded the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. (He's also a personal hero of Freelancers Union founder Sara Horowitz.) Not only was Hillman a leader in organizing workers, his legacy includes such institutions as the Amalgamated Bank and affordable, cooperative housing developments. He stood up against racial discrimination in the labor movement, and co-founded the CIO in order to bring the all-black railway porters' union into the fold. Freelancers Union salutes Sidney Hillman this March 23rd, his birthday!
