Member of the week: Slate Grove, Glass Sculptor

Our member of the week, Slate Grove, works as a glass sculptor. We were especially intrigued by the wide range of Slate’s work. Some of his pieces are meant as sculptural art, while some serve functional purposes, such as vases, bowls, and platters. He even created a glass violin for a very special recipient. You can read more about that project below, and see examples of Slate’s work on his website. Be sure to check out his profile on our Yellow Pages as well.****

**1. **What has been your most interesting project?

My most interesting project was making a sculptural, glass violin which I presented to the world renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman on the Severance Hall stage in Cleveland, Ohio in April of 2005. To be able to walk on stage at the home of the best orchestra in the world (The Cleveland Orchestra), and present a piece of my work to the best violinist in the world, was truly an exhilarating feeling.

2. Why did you decide to go freelance?

Glass work in New York just about has to be freelance. I have no desire to work in a factory as a laborer, I want to work with people who respect my artistic vision. Freelancing allows me to work on lots of different projects, and be involved with lots of different people.

3. What tip would you give to a new freelancer or someone who is considering going freelance?

Self-promotion is the only way to land gigs! The more you show people that you would be as good for their gig, as the gig would be good for you...the more jobs you'll get.

**4. **What is your favorite spot in the city in which you live?

I live in Brooklyn, NY, and my favorite spot is Prospect Park.

**5. ****What is your inspiration?**My inspiration comes from my family. I was raised in a small town in Iowa, by blue-collar, work-aholic parents. They led by example, and never stopped working. My father always told me that being a hard worker, in combination with being a strong thinker, would get me to where I want to be.
