What does affordable housing have to do with affordable insurance?

Today in the New York Times, we read about how the City is working with for-profit real estate developers to create affordable housing. The innovator is Shaun Donovan, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

We immediately felt a kinship with Donovan, because of his market-based approach. "I believe we should work with both [nonprofits and the private sector]," he says in the article. As we confront the high cost of health insurance, Freelancers Union is guided by similar principles. Rather than relying on government subsidies to help the uninsured, we use the market: we group people together so they can afford insurance that would be too expensive for them as individuals.
