Celebrating freedom and freelancing on Juneteenth

Juneteenth isn’t just a day in history to commemorate. It’s a reminder that the pursuit of freedom, opportunity, and economic independence for Black Americans is continued and ongoing.

For many Black Americans, creating economic opportunity has meant building it ourselves. Faced with barriers to enter into traditional employment, many turned to entrepreneurship, skilled trades, creative work, and self-employment to build something for themselves. That spirit of independence continues today.

Black freelancers opt into self-employment for different reasons, be it flexibility, greater control over their careers, additional income streams, or the opportunity to create something truly their own. Whatever the motivation, freelancing represents the freedom to chart your own path.

Independence comes with both opportunities and challenges. It requires resilience, adaptability, and drive. These traits have long been part of the story of Black entrepreneurs, creators, and independent workers whose contributions have transformed our economy and communities.

This Juneteenth, we honor those who fought for freedom and those who transformed that freedom into opportunity. We celebrate the innovators, business owners, artists, writers, and freelancers who continue to create legacies through their work.

Freedom is not just about where we’ve been; it’s also about creating a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
