As a member of Freelancers Union, securing the right health coverage for 2025 is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. With so many options available, it’s essential to take the time to fully explore what’s out there. At Healthy Business Group (HBG), the business behind Solo Health Collective, we strongly encourage all members to consider every option carefully.
Freelancers Union has partnered with several unique solutions to help you find the coverage that fits your needs. Whether you're looking at the ACA exchanges or innovative alternative health solutions, they’ve got you covered.
First you should get a sense of your ACA marketplace options and see what kind of subsidies you may be eligible for - subsidies and plan designs vary from state to state. Next, we recommend you head over to Solo Health Collective for an alternative that might better fit your needs.
Solo is a simplified health plan exclusively created for freelancers and solopreneurs, you will need an EIN to get started. Similar to ACA plans, there are no annual or lifetime limits on benefits. Solo is not a limited medical or short-term medical plan.
Getting your monthly cost with Solo is easy!
What are the benefits of Solo Health?
Solo is available for year-round enrollment - not just November-December. Additionally, you can cancel your Solo plan at any time. We try to make this plan simple and flexible - just like your freelance lifestyle!
Our PPO plan allows you to get care in all 50 states plus coverage for emergencies abroad. As a freelancer, you have the freedom to travel and live where you want, when you want. This is a great feature for those living nomadic lifestyles.
Solo offers plan members the ability to create a health plan and take control of their healthcare expenses through an innovative captive framework. Unlike many other private health plan alternatives, Solo is a major medical plan that unlocks the potential for major savings.
With Solo you’ll have access to:
- Nationwide PPO Network: Solo is a PPO plan, which generally offers more flexibility than HMOs, with larger provider network, out-of-network coverage, and the ability to see specialists without referral.
- No annual frequency limitations: You may be familiar with plans that have set limits on how many times you can see specialists, go to the ER, and more. With Solo you won’t experience any of these headaches.
- Deductible and Out-of-Pocket Maximum: With Solo you select your deductible amount - $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000, this amount is also your out-of-pocket maximum. Eliminating coinsurance is just one way that we’re helping freelancers protect their healthcare costs.
- HSA Eligibility: As a freelancer, you’ll want to take advantage of the tax benefits of a Health Savings Account (HSA), where you can use pre-tax income to pay for medical services. With Solo, the $2,500, and $5,000 deductible options are HSA eligible. Freelancers Union has partnered with Lively for HSA benefits - check them out here.
What Makes Solo Different?
- Solo is not individual health insurance bought on or off the ACA exchanges. Instead, with Solo, your business is the entity that creates the plan. Solo is a form of business insurance. Just like employers offer healthcare through their business, you as a solo business owner contract with Solo to establish a level-funded, self-insured plan.
- A self-insured plan, backed by an A+ rated reinsurer: Our captive is backed by Odyssey Reinsurance, ensuring financial strength and stability. This means Solo’s members can have full confidence knowing that claims are covered beyond standard liability limits by a globally recognized, highly rated reinsurance provider.
- Designed for healthy freelancers - a health questionnaire confirms your eligibility for the plan. This helps us control our costs and pass savings along to the captive members.
- Solo has partnered with Touchcare, a Health Concierge. Touchcare is here to help you make your decision with objective advice. They’re an independent third party available to guide you through your options. As a Solo member, Touchcare can help you find the best in-network providers, schedule appointments, resolve billing issues, and more.
The Freelancers Union offers many different options for you, when comparing plans it’s important to investigate:
- Maximum Annual Premium Cost – What will the total cost of your coverage be?
- Plan Design Differences – Look at factors like deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.
- Network Coverage – Is the network broad enough to cover your needs, or is it more limited? Does your plan work in all 50 states?
Explore, compare, and choose what works best for you!
