Tell us: what matters most to NYC freelancers?

What are the issues that matter most to you as a freelancer in NYC? What policy issues should Freelancers Union work with NYC policymakers to address?

Freelancers Union has partnered with New York City Council Member Brad Lander win some major victories for freelancers in NYC.  We have previously worked with Council Member Lander as lead sponsor and champion of the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, which established first-of-its kind payment protections for freelancers. We also worked together to pass a bill to expand the anti-discrimination protections of the New York City Human Rights Law to cover freelancers. This change went into effect on January 11, 2020.

But we are far from done. Together we must continue to push new policies and protections to support freelance work in New York City. And we want to hear from you. Council Member Lander, in partnership with Freelancers Union, is conducting this short survey to assess what public policies are needed to better support and protect independent workers.

"Freelancers rights are human rights. But up until now, freelancers have been unfairly cut out of fundamental workplace protections. Today we are celebrating Local Law 172, which extends to freelancers the right to be free from harassment and discrimination in their work, and the protection of the NYC Human Rights Law to hold employers accountable. But we won't stop here. We are launching a citywide survey of freelance workers to learn more about how public policy can improve financial and working conditions for freelancers. Together with Freelancers Union, we are building a movement to win the rights and protections that all workers deserve," said Council Member Lander.

Please take a minute to take our survey. Your responses will help us better understand the challenges and opportunities facing freelancers, and help us advocate for new solutions to support the 1.3 million New Yorkers who are working independently.
