We said #FreelanceIsntFree – and the city of New York listened

As Freelancers Union Founder and Executive Director, Sara Horowitz is an innovator for tomorrow's workforce. You can catch up with her on Twitter at @Sara\_Horowitz.

As individuals, many freelancers have learned to accept nonpayment as a hazard of freelance living. But together, we don’t have to.

Over the past couple of months, thousands have joined the #FreelanceIsntFree Campaign to end nonpayment.

When a freelancer gets stiffed, there’s often little recourse for recouping the lost payment. There’s no calling the Department of Labor to report a deadbeat client. Small claims court is time-consuming and still can’t guarantee collection. And sometimes, the agreement is so murky, clients can hide behind he-said / she-said logic.

But when thousands of freelancers band together, real change can happen.

In New York City, freelancers joined forces to say #FreelanceIsntFree – and the City of New York listened.

I'm pleased to announce that next Monday, our efforts will culminate in the introduction of landmark legislation to protect NYC's 1.3 million freelancers from nonpayment.

Please join me at a rally on the steps of City Hall at 12 p.m. on December 7 to show our support for the #FreelanceIsntFree Bill.
