Hospitals spend more NOT to treat the uninsured

According to the New York Times, some hospitals are experimenting with offering free preventive care to the uninsured--with the result that they're saving money on uncompensated ER visits. New York's Health and Hospitals Corporation has a campaign of its own, encouraging people to bring their children to free clinics. And, of course, there's the expense to Americans' health when they don't get regular health care. The government needs to empower more intermediary organizations to offer group-rate coverage to the uninsured, as Freelancers Union does.
