8 Fastest Growing Freelance Sectors of 2013

Every quarter, freelancer.com releases statistics about the fastest growing freelance sectors. Below are the eight fastest growing opportunities of 2013.

Of course, take these with a grain of salt -- these are sectors that are commonly hired for short-term gigs on online platforms, which is still interesting but may not be reflective of growing freelance sectors as a whole.

Creative fields continue to dominate freelance work opportunities. We were surprised that the fields listed below beat even app development (at 14%) and web development.

1. PowerPoint Creation

There has been a 35.4% growth in PowerPoint creation in the first two quarters of 2013.

What this is, day-to-day**: **Some clients are just looking for PowerPoint design, but many are looking for you to create a PowerPoint just by handing you the text of their speech, which requires that you structure and conceptually break down their topic, understand how to present information visually, and perhaps even coach the client through their speech. Experience in speech writing, business development, marketing, and graphic design are all pluses.

Rate per hour: $50-80, or $150 per slide

Fields you could pivot from:

1. Photoshop/Illustrator expertise

2. Graphic design

3. Speech/copywriting

2. Accounting

23.3% increase in job opportunities from Q1 2013-Q2 2013.

What this is, day-to-day: The great thing about accounting is that you can work in so many different fields, and get to meet a lot of different people over the course of your career. Rate per hour: If you’re a CPA, upwards of $50/hour, $200-300/hour for experienced tax professionals

Fields you could pivot from: Unfortunately, you can’t really pivot into this career. A Bachelor’s or Master’s in Accounting is normally required.

3. Report Writing

There has been a 20.5% increase in report writing in the first two quarters of 2013.

What this is, day-to-day: Freelance report writers often begin as copywriters or technical writers, but report writing is a specialized field that often requires you to parse legalese and complicated financial information.
