9-29-09 Runoff Roundup

Well Tuesday's runoff resulted in one more Freelancers Union endorsed candidate winning and the other falling short of victory. Congratulations are in order for Brooklyn Councilman Bill de Blasio who swept the field in the runoff and is now strongly favored to be our next Public Advocate. De Blasio has long been a champion of issues that affect independent workers, especially fighting clients who don’t pay. We look forward to his leadership at the citywide level and can’t wait to strengthen and draw attention to the ever-deteriorating social safety net. Our other endorsed candidate, Brooklyn Councilman David Yassky, didn’t win in his runoff--but he did stand fast by the issues that are important to independent workers. We look forward to working with Councilman John Liu as he seeks to stand up for working people across the city as our likely future Comptroller. One aspect of the election season where there were only winners were the thousands of Freelancers Union members who made calls, knocked on doors, handed out palm cards at subway stops, and voted in droves from SoHo to Forest Hills, Riverdale to Bay Ridge, and from the South Shore to Flushing. As your Membership Engagement Coordinator, I look forward to working with you inspiring folks again as we continue to make New York City more freelancer friendly in the days and months ahead.
